MIC-15K1

nsulation analysis in a wide range

The Sonel MIC-15K1 insulation resistance meter  is designed to measure the insulation resistance of electric power objects, incl. single and multi-core cables, transformers, motors and generators, condensates, switches and other equipment of power stations. It is especially recommended for measurements in areas with very high electromagnetic disturbances, e.g. at power stations with a voltage of 1200 kV AC or 500 kV DC. Thanks to the test voltage of 15 kV (in accordance with the guidelines of ANSI / NETA ATS-2009 TABLES 100.1), the meter can be used for objects with a nominal voltage above 34.5 kV.

The MIC-15k1 is an extremely modern, ergonomic device with intuitive operation. It will satisfy even the most demanding testers in the most difficult conditions, with high disturbances, where other meters will be useless.

Characteristics

  • Partial discharge indicator PDI.
  • Diagnostics of insulation systems based on standard IR, DAR, PI, SV, RT, DD measurements.
  • Testing the electrical strength of the tested object – determination of the breakdown voltage.
  • High immunity to electromagnetic interference guarantees undisturbed operation in stations and in the vicinity of the highest voltage transmission lines (even up to 1200 kV AC and 800 kV DC ).
  • The function of smooth voltage increase over time (RT) will allow for the identification of partial discharges in the facility and for the segmental location of their occurrence.
  • Efficient ( nearly 150 W) converter allows you to burn off the cable insulation, making it easier to locate the place of short circuit in cables and wires:
    • visually (if power cables are visible along their entire length),
    • using reflectometric methods, a seismic-acoustic wave receiver or a voltage drop measurement method – frame A (when the cables are buried).
  • Cooperation with external software.

Application

The MIC-15k1 meter is designed to measure the insulation resistance of power objects, i.e .:

  • single and multi-core cables,
  • transformers,
  • engines and generators,
  • capacitors, switches and other devices of power stations.

It is especially recommended for measurements in areas with very high electromagnetic disturbances, e.g. at power stations with a voltage of 1200 kV AC or 800 kV DC . Thanks to the measurement voltage of 15 kV (in accordance with the guidelines of ANSI / NETA ATS-2009 TABLES 100.1), the meter can be used in measurement objects with a nominal voltage above 34.5 kV.

Device capabilities

Highly efficient HV converter, with a test voltage of 15 kV and a current of up to 10 mA , allows you to measure insulation resistance up to 40 TΩ . Obtaining such a result makes the measure unrivaled . The three-lead measurement with the use of the GUARD cable eliminates surface leakage currents related to insulation contamination, thus increasing the reliability of the obtained results.

The meter will determine the absorption coefficient DAR and the polarization index PI . It will also indicate the value of the DD dielectric discharge .

The device will make it possible to assess the condition of the insulation by applying the test voltage incrementally in steps (SV) or smoothly (RT).

  • The SV method ensures that a dielectric in good condition will provide the same results regardless of the applied voltage.
  • In the RT method, it is possible to determine the insulating properties of the material. The meter smoothly increases the measuring voltage without exposing the object to the so-called electrical stress. It registers the time and the voltage value at which the electric breakdown of the insulation occurred.

Built-in digital filters with averaging time of 10, 30, 60, 100 and 200 seconds guarantee stable measurement results in areas of strong electromagnetic interference.

Afterburning

An exceptionally useful solution is the function that allows burning a damaged object. In the case of exposed cables, this facilitates the visual identification of the fault location. In the case of shielded cables, the method consists in “catching” a seismic-acoustic wave .

Under special conditions, cyclically appearing energy discharges will arise. Thanks to the use of a geophone, it will be possible to very precisely track the place where such a discharge occurs.

Afterburning also helps to locate transient faults (which appear e.g. during rainfall) with the support of reflectometry, and in the case of short-circuits of the cable sheath / cable return to earth (so-called earth faults) – the use of the method of voltage drop measurement (frame A).

Auto-saving of measurement data

The instrument automatically saves the measurement results. The number of autosave points depends on how much data is already in main memory.

Data analysis

The application for Sonel MIC Mobile mobile devices allows you to observe the results during the measurement. The application can generate real-time charts in various configurations. This allows the condition of the object to be assessed during the research.

The option to remotely start and stop the measurement is especially useful . Thanks to it, tests can be carried out remotely, e.g. from another room or inside the car, when the climatic conditions are difficult for the operator. Using the phone’s GPS, you can accurately determine the place of measurement.

Thanks to the mobile application and the Sonel Reader software , the user can collect historical data and compare them with the current results, transferred from the extensive memory of the meter. This solution allows you to prepare a measurement report, track the progress of insulation degradation and plan renovation works.
